Beane acquires nice trade chip in Holliday

Take a step back for a moment and view the Matt Holliday deal from Billy Beane's perspective. The A's general manager is a trader at heart, a man who thrives on the thrill of the wheel-and-deal art he's perfected over the past decade or so with the A's.

The writer makes a good case for the deal from Oakland's point of view. What's puzzling is why the Rockies felt the need to jump at this deal right now.

As an A's fan all I have to say is: "Thank goodness Beane has money to spend!"

Might be the start of the makings of an excting season. Always look to Beane to make the off season fun!

No doubt. Beane has done a wonderful job with a small payroll. One wonders what he could do with more. That being said, there is some talk out there that Holliday will be "flipped" if the A's don't contend, and allowed to walk as a free agent if they do.

Hmmm, hopefully not. It sounds like Lew Wolf is planning on making a lot of money from the new stadium in Fremont and he wants to start spending now in order to start a new dynasty there.

I guess we can only hope. It has been tiring seeing great player after great player leave the franchise because there is no money to pay them.

At least if Beane does make a move, it will probably be a good one. The man doesn't bat 1.000, but he does pretty well when unloading talent. But I understand what you're saying.

Do you think the ballpark, and it's location, is the main reason the A's don't draw very well?

It is a big reason I think. I have been going to A's games at the Coliseum since as long as I can remember (so about 20 years). I was one of those kids running after foul balls through 5 or 6 sections of empty seats at games in the mid 90's.

The stadium isn't horrible (at least from my point of view) but it nothing like other parks I have been to: Pac Bell (AT&T Park), Petco, even Qualcom. It also doesn't have the history and prestige of old parks like Wrigley and Old Yankee Stadium. The Coliseum has also lost much of its old charm and beauty with the construction of the centerfield skyscraper appropriately known as Mount Davis.

I know what the new stadium did for the Giants. They have been able to afford an expensive team of veteran has beens over the last half decade. The Coliseum is just as bad as Candlestick (well maybe it is a little warmer, sometimes). I see the Fremont stadium doing the same thing for the A's. I know many people who go to Giants games for the whole experience (the food, the venue, and sometimes the game). At the coliseum all there really is is just the game, which hasn't been all that great lately. A new stadium will make going to an A's game an event, a night out, not just another baseball game.

Also, transportation will be huge for the new stadium. There is no public transportation to the Coliseum from the San Jose area where I and a large percentage of A's fans live. Traffic on the only freeway to that part of Oakland on a Friday evening is horrible. Also parking at the stadium is horrible and 20,000 people trying to get out on two two lane roads is a nightmare. There have been some nights where it takes an hour to get on the freeway which runs right next to the parking lot!

To get to AT&T park from the San Jose area is much easier. There is train which runs special game services located only two blocks from the stadium. Driving is still a pain but their are multiple parking lots with multiple exits.

The Fremont stadium will be at a public transportation hub. It will also be located near two major freeways, instead of just one. Also, the parking plans are great. If I am not mistaken they include shuttles so fans can park away from the stadium and not have to deal with large amounts of traffic after the game.

Personally I can't wait for the new stadium. The increase in ticket revenue is the missing piece in the puzzle which will return the A's to their 70s and late 80's granduer. At least I hope ;-)

Great info, TReilly. Thanks. A new park can be a big help, as I saw first-hand here in Seattle when they built Safeco Field and blew up the Kingdome. It really does become more about the experience as a whole than the team itself. Then if you throw a good team into the mix, look out.
